Day 6: Poas, Doka Coffee, Grecia and Sarchi

Hola from Costa Rica!!!

Day 6 has been another fun-filled day! Many of the St. Rose travelers decided to do various things on their own, but the SHS girls along with a few of our St. Rose friends did a lot! Our tour guide, Alberto, joined us once again and we left for our first destination, the Poas Volcano!

Along the way, we stopped at a Costa Rican supermarket to grab drinks and snack for the long day ahead...

The Supermarket

Then we continued to the top of the volcano. Before we reached the top, we stopped at a local shop on the side of the volcano called "Freses del Volcan". At this shop, many of us purchased some souvenirs, especially sweatshirts and ponchos for the cold and rainy tour of the volcano. As you can tell from the pictures, it was pretty wet.

When we got to the top of the volcano, we looked out and unfortunately only saw a bunch of clouds. On the bright side, we got a pretty group group picture in our rainy weather attire! Check it out....

When we decided that the rain and clouds was enough, we walked back down the side of the volcano and made our way to our next destination: the Doka Estate (coffee plantation). Along the way, Alberto stopped and got us some of the local cheese and strawberries! So delicious!

Cheese and Strawberries!

Upon arrival to Doka, we went to the cafeteria and had a buffet lunch with all of the food and drink you could want (including COFFEE, Mmmmm). After lunch, Alberto gave us a tour and explanation of the coffee plantation. We were able to see all of the different processes that take place over the course of coffee production. It was really amazing to see all of the old machinery that still works after being in use for three generations! While on the plantation, the girls found a friendly dog and he got a lot of loving attention. :-) After the tour, we were able to see the plantation's Butterfly Garden! Another beautiful sight to see! Check out the pictures from our time at Doka...

Following the butterfly "experience," we loaded up the bus with a bunch of crazy people and headed back to Grecia, where we had performed one of our concerts earlier this week. This time, we were able to get a tour of the cathedral and we learned about the history of the cathedral and it's Belgian roots. When we were all done in Grecia, we went to the Costa Rican center of wood carving, Sarchi. While in Sarchi, Alberto showed us the largest Ox cart in the world! It holds the record in the Guinness Book of World Records! He also gave us the history of the local wood workers and artists, which was VERY interesting. At the end, we had more time to shop for souvenirs. So much to do! We have lots of pictures for you today! Enjoy!!!
